Doing "light" stuff… in a "dark" world!

Christmas was fast approaching and we had just finished our Bible study looking at the first chapter of James. Leaving the parking lot I couldn’t get verse 27 out of my head, “ Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.” While I let this truth settle in, I had mixed emotions. I was excited about Christmas coming but I was also bothered by the spectacle that it had become. It made me think back a few years when Saul, our lead missionary in Pakistan, asked me, “Why on the birthday of our savior do people in your country spend so much on gifts for other people?” And he wasn’t talking about small gifts either. According to about.com the US spent an estimated $584.3 billion on Christmas and 45 billion of that was on Black Friday alone!! I’m not sure why that bothered me…but it did. In fact, just thinking about it on the ride home had given me OBFCD (Obsessive Black Friday Christmas Disorder)!! There was at least some good news. It was in light of this newfound discontent, no pun intended, that I got the idea for Light Week!

Light Week will be a time, before the hustle and bustle of the world gets going, to focus on Jesus. It will consist of the Monday- Thursday leading up to Black Friday. During this time we ask that you prayerfully consider making a donation to VWS and in honor of the birth of Jesus we will use the money to help orphans and widows in Pakistan, Mexico, and locally celebrate His birth.
